Starting your own business

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

When it comes to starting a business, you need the mindset of an entrepreneur, one that has a positive attitude and goes into the new world with an open mind and turning every step of the process into learning opportunities.

An entrepreneur is an individual who starts and builds a new business to produce goods or services and takes upon the personal risk in exchange for potential profit and enterprise success. The idea of a new business has evolved, and now there are more ways than ever to use the necessary skills to translate innovative ideas to the real world. What’s even better is that you can be a successful business owner without graduating from business school!

The question is, how do we get there?

One of the most fundamental aspects is to have a purpose. Identify what you want to achieve and be confident with your vision. Transfer your ideas into a detailed business plan to help articulate your vision and goals, and outline the most practical and cost- effective ways to achieve them. For financial advice, your accountant can assist you through the complexity of the process and provide relevant information and tools for personal and business growth. Then it is a matter of implementing your plan and getting into action.

Some of the successful business owners here in Aotearoa include Chris Kim, owner of The Vant Garde, previously known as Kompass Coffee, and his recent addition Janus Eatery. His vision to intertwine coffee and art led to the establishment of The Vant Garde, where he is now providing a platform to support young artists in Auckland.

A crucial factor to remember is consistently finding ways to improve. Have an openness to opportunities that you may not have considered to help enhance and expand your business. Being open to anything is fundamental. A pandemic like Covid-19 has taught us that anything can happen, and you must be prepared to adapt to the changing environment.

Starting up your own business requires patience and hard work. Use feedback to make things happen and use those compliments to remember your purpose. Be curious and stay motivated!
